Excessive Burping – Its Possible Causes And Remedies

Simply put, burping is the air that comes out of the stomach usually after a meal. It is normal when occurs less frequently like 2-3 times a day

It’s a sign that the stomach is doing its job and releasing out excessive air trapped in it. But, if it occurs more frequently and continuously for more than 3 days, it’s something that needs medical attention. Excessive burping, which may be associated with the burning of throat, pungent smell is not healthy and might indicate something is wrong inside you.

Why do people burp?

When you swallow food, it passes through the food pipe to the stomach where it is acted upon by acids and enzymes for digestion. While eating, if you swallow air along with the food, or consume soda, beer, etc. that bubbles up in the stomach, the excess air is expelled out through burps (and also by farts).

Causes of Excessive Burping

  • Swallowing too much air while eating: Taking up too much air while eating, especially when you talk or yawn during eating is the most common cause of excessive burping.
  • Medications: Medicines especially antibiotics, painkillers, antidepressants play with the gut bacteria that lead to bloating which manifests as burps.
  • Food habits: Consumption of certain foods such as broccoli, cauliflower, beans, aerated drinks, chewing gums, hard candy, etc. causes gas in your stomach and make you burp more. Some people find difficult to digest these foods and thus burp excessively.
  • Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease(GERD): If you burp excessively, it might be the reason for this chronic disease. In GERD, the muscle at the lower end of the oesophagus, where it meets the stomach doesn’t close properly. This may cause the acidic cyme to rise the food pipe causing heartburn and excessive burping.
  • Intolerance to certain foods: Persons who are lactose, fructose or gluten intolerant may suffer from excessive burping causing uneasiness.
  • Peptic ulcer: Peptic ulcer may cause you to burp frequently and excessively.
  • Gastritis: If you experience excessive burps and hiccups, this might indicate that you are having gastritis and heartburn.
  • Gallstones: This may also cause burping and belching along with abdominal pain.

Symptoms of Excessive Burping

  • Unintentional weight loss
  • Heartburn
  • Burning throat
  • Bloating

Remedies For Excessive Burping  

  • Eat and chew slowly while you have your food. Also, drink water slowly using a glass.
  • Don’t chew gum and don’t consume excess aerated drinks like soda.
  • Don’t eat broccoli, cauliflower, beans and dairy products if you are intolerant to these food items.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you discovered the cause of your burping is due to medications.
  • Don’t do heavy work after having food. Sit straight in the yoga posture of vajrasana. This posture improves the digestion and makes an easy passage for the release of gas.
  • If your burping is due to GERD, make sure you treat your GERD correctly and manage it well.
  • Have ginger if you have indigestion problem that manifests with burps.
  • Treat your peptic ulcers, if any, by surgery to get rid of excessive burping.
  • Burping due to gastritis can be prevented by avoiding certain foods like tobacco, alcohol and acidic beverages.

Pay attention to your eating habits so that you keep your burping to regular frequency. Seek urgent medical care if you have any severe medical disorders. Staying away from chewing gums, aerated drinks like soda, cola and cold beverages are some practical methods to practice that can help you get rid of excessive burps.
