What is conception
You might have heard about conception as well as a misconception. Here we are throwing light on conception, what it means and how it results in pregnancy. Everything a woman must know!
What is Conception and when does it occur?
Conception is the condition when man’s sperm enter the uterus from the vagina and fertilizes the egg, present in the fallopian tube. The primary thing to know about conception is that it occurs during the time of ovulation. One can easily count the ovulation period by counting the days of the menstrual cycle, considering the 1st day of the menstrual cycle as 1.
The ovulation period occurs around the 14th day if the menstrual cycle is of 28th days. Women must keep in mind that as per their cycle the ovulation period date may vary a bit. During the time of the ovulation, the egg gets released from one of the ovaries through the fallopian tubes. And, when it happens, if the sperm is present inside the fallopian tube, the sperm can fertilize the egg.
An egg has a time of 12-24 hours to get fertilized by the sperm whereas the sperm can live inside the woman’s body for many days. So the conception might happen if the intercourse happened a few days before the egg got released or just at the time of its release. It mainly depends on the timing.
Conception depends upon several things that can be a reproductive system of a lady and the quality of the sperm. As per the doctors, one should have unprotected sex, to get pregnant, three to four days before the ovulation period, which automatically increases the chances of fertilizing the egg, as soon as they will be released, since the sperm will be present there already.
How does the conception results into the pregnancy?
As we have discussed, the sperm fertilizes the egg in the fallopian tube. As soon as it happens, the cells in the embryo start dividing at a very high rate. In seven days, these cells results in the blastocyst, which remains in the uterus.
After this, the fertilized egg gets implanted in the uterus which increases the level of a hormone called as progesterone. It results in the thickening of the uterine lining.
From ovulation to implantation, the process might take 7-14 days. At times, it might reach to your next menstrual cycle if it’s of 28 days. At this point, women can take a home pregnancy test. Since the hCG ( Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) also known as the pregnancy hormone will be high at this time, the home pregnancy test kits work by reacting with and let you know the results.
Here are some of the things that you must keep in your mind before buying the pregnancy home kit:
- The test is not accurate at times and is completely dependent upon the sensitivity.
- Different women produce different levels of hCG during pregnancy. Thus, some test kits might show the result in one go, or some might take more than a few missed periods to let you know that you are pregnant.
It’s always suggested to visit the gynecologist to confirm the pregnancy. You can even visit prior to your pregnancy to take tips about conception and other things.
